WEEKLY HEALTH UPDATE
Week of: Monday, June 21st, 2010

.
Mental Attitude:
Tea, A Natural Way to Reduce Stress. Drinking tea can strengthen your immune
system and your body's ability to fight off germs and infections. Both green and
black teas contain a beneficial amino acid called L-theanine, which can boost
the immune system. L-theanine also promotes a sense of relaxation, calmness and
well being by influencing the release and concentration of neurotransmitters
(dopamine, serotonin and GABA) in the brain.
Monique N. Gilbert, B.Sc.
Health Alert:
Crackdown On Medicare Fraud Recovers $2.5 Billion! The US government says it
recovered $2.5 billion in overpayments for the Medicare trust fund just last
year. Investigators have new tools to help crack down on health care fraud, with
the Justice Department and the Health and Human Services Department working
cooperatively. The new Affordable Care Act will lengthen prison sentences in
criminal cases and provides an additional $300 million over the next 10 years
for stronger enforcement. Federal investigators are also blocking unscrupulous
companies from getting into government health care programs in the first place.
Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. May 2010
Diet:
Small Intestines Are A Big Deal. The small intestine is 22 feet long and the
lining is shed every 3 days. The large intestine houses over 700 species of
bacteria that perform a variety of functions for the over all health of your
digestive tract. Guyton Physiology.
Exercise: 4 Ways To
Slow Aging - #3 Yoga. As you age, yoga is an excellent way to maintain or
increase your flexibility and strength. To ensure proper technique, attend a
class for beginners or seniors.
Chiropractic:
More On Posture. Forward head posture leads to long term muscle strain, disk
herniations, arthritis and pinched nerves.
The Mayo Clinic, 2000
Wellness/Prevention:
Cholesterol. Cholesterol isn't inherently bad. It's essential to normal body
functions and is found in all your cells. Cholesterol helps with digestion and
hormone production. Too much LDL ("bad" cholesterol) can narrow blood vessel
walls. As blood flow is restricted, the risk of heart attack or stroke
increases. The leading cause of elevated LDL levels is a diet high in saturated
and trans fats. Eat more foods high in soluble fiber such as oatmeal, apples and
kidney beans. A sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise are major causes of low
HDL ("good" cholesterol) levels. Consuming omega-3 fatty acids by eating fatty
fish (salmon, mackerel) or taking fish oil supplements will help boost your HDL
levels. Mayo Clinic, May 2010
